Curaçao, Netherland Antilles, May 20 2009. - For the second time since 2007, the people of Curaçao, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, voted using the Smartmatic Auditable Election System (SAES). The results of the Referendum were upheld by the Supreme Electoral Council (Konseho Supremo Elektoral) and accepted to be accurate and reliable by all the parties involved.

For this event, 178 SAES machines were deployed in 106 polling places throughout the Island. In this Referendum almost 119 thousand Curaçao residents got a say in the future of their island. The election offered a choice between Sí or Nò to a deal brokered between the local Curaçao government and the Netherlands. Even though it was a closed election, all political factors accepted the Sí option won by a small percent, thanks to the accuracy of the technology.

The SAES system stands apart from other voting technologies because it is entirely auditable. After casting a vote, every voter can verify it physically in a receipt the machine prints. In addition, the system features a vast array of security provisions, check points at various levels, and event monitoring mechanisms that allow both the authorities and civil organizations to verify the results through multiple audits.

''Smartmatic's goal is to help governments to be more efficient, which in the case of SAES means achieving reliable and successful electoral processes, we are pleased to say that in Curaçao we have again fulfilled our goals'' said Antonio Mugica, Smartmatic's CEO.

Besides voting machines, Smartmatic supplied equipment maintenance, technical documentation, training and support during Election Day, as well as project management services. The election was held in two languages, Dutch and Papiamentu. Once again the SAES system has been deployed in a successful electoral process.
