Electoral authorities of Latin America acknowledge the advantages of SAES

Bogota, April 9, 2005.-
Smartmatic introduced its Smartmatic Automated Election Systems (SAES) to electoral administration authorities, electronic voting experts and renowned scholars from the entire American continent during the III Inter-American Meeting on Electoral Technology. The event took place 6-7 April 2005, in Colombia, sponsored by the Organization of American States and the Electoral Organization of Colombia.

The III Inter-American Meeting on Electoral Technology was the centre of discussion on the progress, importance and relevance of electronic election systems in the region. It was also the introductory meeting of different country experiences in the continent. Representatives of electoral administration bodies from the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile explained the range of the new technologies purchased or developed by the different participating countries, their success experiences and know-how acquired in recent years.

Smartmatic Chief Executive Officer, Antonio Mugica, exhibited a video illustrating the SAES experience in the recent Venezuelan elections. Mugica explained to attending electoral authorities and other participants why the SAES technology stands as the easiest and safest solution to exercise the right to vote, and why it brought about huge cost reductions, on a national scale.

A simultaneous showroom on electoral technology products and services providers was open to electoral authorities and participants of the III Inter-American Meeting. Smartmatic?s stand included several SAES3000 voting machines and their electronic ballots, so that all attendees were able to experience and confirm how easy it is to vote with an SAES machine: its on-screen interface shows the names and a even a picture of all running candidates; the voter needs only touch either the screen or the electronic ballot device to make choices, confirm them, and moments later the machine produces a printout of the vote, allowing the voter to verify his/her choices and then deposit it in a ballot box. The printouts can be used at a later moment in a recount, should the electronic tally need to be verified manually.
